Q. I have a car enthusiast in the family. Do you have some suggestions for a gift?
A. Here are a few items that should appeal to anyone who owns a car. A GPS is a great gift for both the novice and experienced driver. Studies show that a GPS used responsibly improves driving and reduces stress. A digital tire gauge allows easy and accurate tire pressure monitoring. For emergencies or for the DIY’er a Cordless LED Work Light can be a great addition to the garage and/or a vehicle's emergency kit. For the serious DIY’er a good repair manual or subscription to a repair database such as AllData.com. Remote car starters can be a great gift on cold morning, but make sure installation is included and the installer will guarantee their work. Perhaps, a great coffee table book for the non-driver such as “Art of the Hot Rod” by Ken Gross. Finally, consider an advanced driving school course. These programs provide practical experience in skid recovery, braking distances and general car control and crash prevention.
Q. I have a 2007 Altima. I just bought three new tires; the fourth had been replaced earlier and has about 10,000 miles on it. The tire dealer said that would be fine, but I am not confident. Should I replace the fourth tire as well?
A. For most vehicles with all-wheel-drive systems, it is critical to replace all four tires at one time. In these vehicles, having tires with different wear can cause damage to the center differential or transfer case. Because your car is front-wheel drive and 10,000 miles represents less than 20 percent wear, you should be fine as long as all tires are the same brand.
Q. Is the Acura TSX a good buy for the price? In other words, would you buy this sports car or is there another car similar to it at a better value or better quality?
A. The TSX is a great car with fine handling and perhaps the best quality for the money. In my opinion, the best driving experience comes from the BMW 3 series. The handling and steering lead in their class. The Audi A4 also offers a good value and perhaps the best interior of any car in this price range.
Q. I have a 2006 Cobalt. My power steering keeps going out when I am driving down the road. Can you help me?
A. The Cobalt uses an electric power steering system and computer controls. Have a technician scan the computer for codes. If no codes are present, look for an intermittent electrical connection with the 60-ampere power fuse. Additional possibilities are faulty steering motor or, in some cases, the need for reprogramming the computer.
Q. I’m considering one of three cars and hope you can help with my decision. The Honda FIT, Chevrolet Aveo and Toyota Yaris are all contenders. Which one would you pick? Is there a similar car I should be considering?
A. In my opinion, the Honda FIT is the best of the three cars you have looked at. It offers great use of space, outstanding fuel economy and Honda’s reputation for quality. Two other cars that are worth looking at that have more than their share of personality are the Kia Soul and the Nissan Cube.
